If you read my other blog, Tales of a Golf Gal, you know I've written lately about "stuff". Well, it turns out I'm not the only one with too much stuff. People move and find they can't or don't want to use something again, or just want a change. "Downsizers" need to get rid of stuff, and generally have some pretty nice things to get rid of. An opportunity for all you newlyweds!
Yesterday I stopped at the "Queen of Hearts" Antiques and Interiors here in Atlanta. It's what I call a "junk" store where vendors have a booth and sell their wares. Some of it's antiques and some of it's just knick-knaks or old furniture they don't want anymore. You have to weed by a lot of junk, but there are always great finds and interesting pieces too. It's a great way to get ideas and find some character pieces to decorate with and cheaper than buying new.

I love this idea:

it's a bread tray, but great as a centerpiece for your table or on your mantle

Last October my daughter and new son-inlaw were married on Hilton Head Island. We vacationed the week preceding the wedding along with most of the extended family and a lot of friends. On Thursday we had a Beach Olympics day. We split everyone up into 3 teams, teammates wearing the same color bandana.

We had team relay races, balloon throws and bocci ball, along with a few other side events. Not only did we have tons o' fun, but it was a great way to get everyone to know each other a bit better before the wedding festivities started.

I guess because I've been thinking of Father's Day, coming up in a few weeks, I wanted to write this post...

One of the most special traditions of your wedding reception is the dance with your father and "his little girl". He's watched you grow into a beautiful, independent, young woman and has been there for you all along the way.
This is when George Banks, in "Father of the Bride", flashes back to when he was playing basketball out on the driveway with his daughter in braces, now the bride-to-be. When I watch that movie now, it makes me tear up.
Of course you and your dad may already have a special song, but... if you need to find one for the big dance, here are a few songs to think about...

Bob Carlisle's Butterfly Kisses is one of the all-time favorites. The message is loved by dads and daughters alike and the tempo makes dancing easy.

When Angels Fly, new to the typical list of father-daughter wedding songs, is performed by Tony Ransom & The Heavenly Light Orchestra. It is inspiring and memorable.

I Loved Her First by the country/pop group Heartland, is a song that will melt the heart of daughter, father and every onlooker.

South Hampton wedding on the Lawn

I grew up on Long Island, on the North Shore, and we sailed and swam at a yacht club. It was our summer vacation, every summer. I was married at the club in May of 1978, an eternity ago. Even as an adult, my own children took sailing lessons there.
I still love anything nautical... from the color navy blue to signal flags, knots and seashells... and... I especially love spending a lazy summer at a beach house on the water.

I know the coral is a bit Caribbean, but I love the red accent

Wouldn't it be lovely to set up your ceremony chairs on this lawn, a nice off shore breeze gently blowing, and say your vows with the ocean in the background?!

The cost of mailing your invitations just went up, again. If you stocked up on the "forever stamp" you're okay for 1 ounce, but otherwise here are two new designs for your first class 1 ounce postage.

On May 1, 2009, in Washington, DC, the Postal Service™ will issue a 44–cent Wedding (Rings) special stamp, designed by Ethel Kessler of Bethesda, Maryland.
The new Wedding (Rings) stamp features a photograph of two gold wedding rings resting on a small white pillow; a slender ribbon of white silk unites them. The photograph was taken by Renee Comet of Washington, DC.
On May 8, 2009, in Washington, DC, the Postal Service™ will issue a 44–cent, Love: King and Queen of Hearts definitive stamp with two different designs in a convertible booklet of 20 stamps. The stamp was designed by Derry Noyes of Washington, DC, and Jeanne Greco of New York, New York.

Always weigh your invitation with all the pieces you're including inside of it first to make sure you've covered the weight with the proper postage. Just bring one, put together, to the Post Office and have them tell you the postage required. You want to be sure your guests receive your invitation and you don't get them back!

Keep it all under two ounces and then you can use this new wedding cake stamp

The inspiration colors were requested by Alexandra. Her favorite color is aqua and she's wondering what to pair with it. She loved the idea of a signature drink in the palette colors, and with orange there are so many delicious drinks to choose from!

The invitation by Wedding Paper Divas combines both colors in a fun paisley design. In the board above the maids are wearing aqua, but maybe you'd prefer them in melon or orange like the board below...

Your bridesmaids will look great with the changing colors of the leaves. There are so many functions when having a wedding, may as well enjoy sending all your favorites!

Newport at the turn of the 19th century was where the socialites of Boston, New York, and Philadelphia came for the summer. They were among the richest people in America at the time—from railroad tycoons and coal barons to plantation owners. The era during which they lived here, the late 1800s up through the 1920s, is often referred to as the Gilded Age. It was a time when whom you knew was everything. The social register, capped at 400 names, was created by Caroline Astor.
Next summer, my niece will be married at the Mrs. Astor's summer home.
I visited Newport and toured the "cottages" back in the late 1970's and was awed by the opulence of a time when the rich came for six to eight weeks, sailed, partied and had high teas, and then made their way back home when the New England summer faded.
I've always wanted to bring my girls on a trip to see the mansions of the Cliff Walk. Now, next June, we'll all get to go... and dance in the ballroom where the elite of American society once partied the summer away.

My advice is... choose a pattern you absolutely love, because like your groom, it's the one you will have forever.
I'm in love with this Wedgewood "Golden Bird" china pattern!
I love the background color of robin's egg blue paired with the golds of the birds, grapes and leaf design.

When I was married 30 years ago, I chose Wedgewood "Wild Strawberry" as my china. It's in as perfect condition today as it was 30 years ago, and I still love it.

Both these patterns above are fairly busy, but also timeless.

For the kitchen though, I love plain all white. One of my favorites has always been "Nantucket Basket", also by Wedgewood. With white china you can change your color scheme on a whim by using any colorful napkins, linens or placemats, and add any colorful serving pieces. Maybe it's growing up on Long Island, but I love the nautical look of this!

Your china is a part of your registry that will be with you through many happy years of entertaining family and friends. Love it!

Decorated cookies are so cute and fun as a party favor! We did this for my daughter's bridal shower. We ordered wedding cake cookies from our local bakery, put each cookie in a clear cellophane bag, tied it with a tag with the guest's name on it, and put it at their place on the tables.
It was our place card and thank you gift all in one!They would be so cute for a baby shower too...
